We have excellent news to start the year for the concert band. Following the resignation of our founder, Koss Siwers, who is enjoying a well-deserved break, we found a new conductor.

She is Nadia Myers, a flute and piccolo player (a break from trumpeters) who has had extensive experience with the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony. Nadia is passionate about wind bands and is studying a Bachelor of Music at UQ, as well as finishing a Science degree. Nadia has not been a regular band conductor but has had some wonderful experiences in the field, including being guest conductor of the Queensland Orchestra. She has been taught by Maestro Michael Christie, and Head of Music at Brisbane Girls Grammar School, Mark Sullivan.

We welcome Nadia to our group and feel sure we will forge a happy and fulfilling partnership with her.

Nadia and the committee have decided on music for Term 1. Here are the titles, in no particular order:

  • The Stripper
  • Mancini Magic
  • Intermezzo
  • Dam Busters March
  • True Love Ways
  • Gypsy Rose
  • March to the Scaffold
  • English Folk Songs Suite
  • Aladdin
  • Light Cavalry Overture
  • Tijuana Brass
  • Summertime
  • Bugler’s Rag
  • and, especially for Anzac Day – Waltzing Matilda, Abide with Me and Advance Australia Fair.

New players needed

When the concert band resumed rehearsals on 4 February with Nadia as leader, we welcomed three new players: two clarinets and a flute. But to create a really full sound we need more players, especially:

Tubas

French Horn

Oboe

Bassoon

Tenor Saxophone

Baritone Saxophone

Percussion

Alto Saxophone

Players of Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium, Baritone, Tenor Horn and Trombone are also welcome to come along and try the music.

Please encourage instrumental players in your friends and family to come and play with us.

Cheers from BrizWest
